Japanese Patent Translation

My name is Marc Adler, and I’m a Japanese-to-English technical translator with 18 years of experience translating technical documents and ten years of experience specializing in patent applications and patent-related documents, including both PCT and for-information translations in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, and of non-application technical documents such as WOSAs, IPRPs, and abstracts (all for WIPO-contracted agencies), as well as USPTO and JPO office actions and related documents. Was that a run-on sentence? I’m not sure. I’ve been translating patents so long that I no longer recognize run-on sentences. Non-patent documents I’ve translated include reams of exhibits, mainly technical articles. I also have a black belt in translating appellate briefs. I know what 甲123 and 乙456 mean and how to translate them correctly. If I told you the names of the companies involved in litigation cases I’ve worked on, your eyes would pop out, but then the NDA ninjas would fall from the ceiling and murder me instantly, so I’m taking that info with me to the grave. (The non-compete clause ninjas are just as deadly, by the way, so I might have to turn down work from you for reasons I can’t tell you but you can guess. You could get around that by sending me work anonymously, but then you’d have to pay me anonymously, and I’m not interested in bitcoin or figuring out the tax ramifications (and potential social stigma?) of getting paid anonymously in bitcoin. You probably aren’t either.)

If you want to send me a file securely and you know about PGP encryption, scroll all the way down.

In my free time I do literary translation. I have four published book-length translations. Two are novels (A Caring Man by Akira Arai and Lala Pipo by Hideo Okuda), one is a sex manual (I know, I know) written by a Japanese celebrity (Slow Sex Secrets: Lessons from the Master Masseur by Adam Tokunaga), and one is a cocktail recipe book by a world-renowned Japanese mixologist (Cocktail Techniques by Kazuo Ueda).

Here’s my LinkedIn page, which is basically the same as this page, but humorless and with fancier graphics.
